EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Democrats, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (MI-07) wasted no time Tuesday morning making veiled calls for gun control less than 12 hours after the deadly shooting on the campus of Michigan State University.

“Words are not good enough,” Gov. Whitmer said from a podium at Henry Center on MSU’s campus. “We must act and we will.”

Both Whitmer and Rep. Slotkin made their way to podium first, before police officers and doctors.

“I am filled with rage that we have to have another press conference to talk about our children being killed in their schools,” Slotkin said. “You either care about protecting kids or you don’t.”

Slotkin went on. “Please don’t tell me you care about the safety of children if you’re not willing to have a conversation about keeping them safe in a place that should be a sanctuary.”

As of this point, police have not confirmed what kind of gun was used in the shooting or a motive that drove 43-year-old Anthony McRae to kill three others, wound five, and then kill himself.

Michigan Democrats have full control of both houses in Lansing, and gun control has been a pet issue they have vowed to tackle.
