Mayfield became the ELHS principal on July 1, 2022. Mayfield had previously worked in law enforcement and other school administration roles. According to the district, Mayfield had been on a leave described as health-related for several weeks before resigning on March 10.

The district said in an email that Wayne State University confirmed Mayfield had not earned a degree, nor had he been enrolled as a student there since 1999.

In addition, Mayfield crafted a fake transcript which showed four semesters of coursework in 2021 and 2022.
