DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Detroit’s Alex Faedo won his first game of the season in a big way going six innings with 10 strikeouts as the Tigers opened up the series over Chicago, 7-2. He allowed just three hits and two earned runs as Detroit moves closer to a .500 record at 23-25.
“He was incredible. He had a good fastball, a good slider and mixed in some changeups late,” said Detroit manager A.J. Hinch. “He got into a lot of chase counts and attacked guys.”

Faedo’s pitching was backed up by a strong offensive performance of 10 hits including a home run by Akil Baddoo. Javier Baez and Zack Short both had two RBI while Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, and Baddoo each had a RBI and two hits.
Hinch added about the four-run fourth inning saying, “Akil got that inning started and (Torkelson) finished it, but those were professional at-bats in between.”
Down 1-0 headed to the bottom of the fourth inning, Detroit brought in four runs as Baddoo started the inning off with a solo shot to right field on an 0-1 count to tie the game at one. Five batters later, and with one out, Baez singled to center field bringing in two runs for a 3-1 lead. After Greene struck out, Torkelson singled in the fourth run of the inning for a three-run lead, 4-1.
Chicago added their second run in the top of the fifth but Detroit collected one run in the sixth and two in the eighth for the 7-2 final. Greene had the RBI in the sixth inning and Short recorded a two RBI single in the eighth as both Greene and Torkelson scored.
With Faedo’s performance, he became only the third Tiger pitcher to record a 10-strikeout, zero-walk game with three or fewer hits. The other two were Denny McLain in 1965 and Anibal Sanchez in 2014.
The second game in the series will be played on Friday night at 6:40 p.m.
