WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan) quickly changed her tune on Friday after voting the day before not to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
On Thursday while a 41-year-old Lebanese-born U.S. citizen rammed his explosives-filled car into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield and was killed by a security guard, Slokin and fellow Democratic U.S. Senator Gary Peters voted against funding DHS.

Without referencing her vote directly, Slotkin appeared to throw her support behind the members of DHS but singled out U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as its “own conversation.”
“We need to fund the Department of Homeland Security and we need, in my view, to cut away all the conversation on ICE which is its own conversation from all the core missions of the Department of Homeland Security. They’re essential. They’re on the job. They’re working today.”
The greater Jewish community is still reeling from the attack on Temple Israel yesterday. Were it not for their private security and local law enforcement, this would have been an even greater tragedy.

U.S. Senator Peters did not speak on his vote either, but did express his thankfulness for first responders.
My heart is with the families and everyone affected by the violence at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. I am monitoring the situation, and people should follow the direction of law enforcement. I’m grateful for these first responders for their quick response.
