EMMET COUNTY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Flooding washed out a portion of a popular highway for tourists in Northern Michigan.

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday that the M-119 Highway, also known as the Tunnel of Trees, is closed between Island View and Division Road.

“The roadway has been washed out presumably due to flooding. Please seek an alternative route. Updates about the roads will continue as more information becomes available. Stay safe and remain vigilant,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.

The Petoskey Area website describes the famous Tunnel of Trees as  “a 20-mile scenic drive.” The drive draws thousands of tourists annually.

While the crews with the Emmet County Road Commission and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) are working to fix the washout, a timeline on repairs is not clear.
