Michigan’s 2020 Senate race just got more competitive.
The campaign of John James, the GOP challenger for the seat of Michigan Sen. Gary Peters, announced $3 million in donations in the third quarter. The money came from over 30,000 individual donors and is one of the largest earnings in Michigan Senate history. Peters’ campaign has yet to publish his fundraising numbers, but raised $2.4 million in the second quarter and is expected to make similar gains.

The announcement came less than a week after the MIRS published a poll showing James down by 16 points against Peters, with respondents mostly voting along party lines and Peters holding an advantage among independent voters. The campaign’s tightness has caught the attention of national commentators and donors, with some considering James’ candidacy instrumental in both party’s 2020 election strategies.
John James is a former helicopter pilot and business owner who unsuccessfully ran against Sen. Debbie Stabenow in 2018. James lost by 6.5 percent, and hopes to use his momentum to win against Peters who many consider a far weaker candidate. James already made headlines with his campaign’s ability to raise funds, earning $1.5 million in the first three weeks after he announced his candidacy.
