Did you expect anything different? I surely didn’t. It was just the Lions being the Lions. With their playoff hopes technically on the line Sunday, the Lions lost to the Oakland Raiders 31-24 in typical Detroit Lions fashion.
Down seven points and facing a fourth-and-goal situation with 8 seconds to play, the Lions called a pass play to Logan Thomas that fell incomplete in the back of the end zone. On the field was Logan Thomas and tight end Jesse James, two running backs and an extra lineman, and Tyrell Crosby. No Kenny Golladay. No Danny Amendola. And no Marvin Jones. Yep, with their season on the line for the most part they didn’t have their best playmakers on the field. You can’t make this stuff up Lions fans.

The Raiders scored the winning touchdown one series earlier and dropped the Lions to 3-4-1 and saw them squander a prime opportunity to gain ground on their NFC North rivals and division leaders as the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings both lost on Sunday. The Lions couldn’t capitalize on a day their division rivals lost or on Oakland penalties and an utterly absurd timeout call. The Raiders were offering up a win to the Lions on a silver platter and Detroit decided they didn’t want to accept it. So with that, it doesn’t appear as if the Lions are going to play meaningful games late this season.
Should we be surprised? But hey, the Pistons and Red Wings will curb the disappointment of the Lions missing out on the playoffs right? Wrong.
The Red Wings are tied for the most losses and have the second fewest points in the NHL. The young Red Wings can’t score or keep the puck out of their own net. Not a good combination. It’s early, but the Pistons look to once again be a team fighting to just make the playoffs. Granted they are playing without Blake Griffin, but they have the look of a middling middle of the pack team in the Eastern Conference.
On a more positive note, did you see with the Washington Nationals World Series championship that the entire starting pitching staff of the 2014 Detroit Tigers have now won World Series rings? Max Scherzer and Anibal Sanchez were members of the Nationals World Series winning staff and joined Justin Verlander, David Price and Rick Porcello as World Series champions since leaving the Tigers.
