LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Student athletes in Michigan can’t seem to catch a break as rising COVID-19 cases continue to threaten their sports seasons.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) reports that 101 high school basketball teams have withdrawn from the state tournament due to COVID-19 cases. A senior public health physician with MHSAA told Mlive.com, “We are not heading in the right direction…if we don’t double down on testing and getting more vaccines in arms, I’m concerned about progression of these athletic team outbreaks.”

MDHHS paused all sports in November 2020 and did not resume until January.
A rise in case numbers comes at a time when deaths remain low in the state. Rising cases do not mean people are experiencing symptoms or have been hospitalized.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer told AP News that rising cases are a “stark reminder that this virus is still very real.” However, Whitmer said she doesn’t plan to tighten restrictions on indoor dining and sports that were eased recently.
