LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Michigan National Guard members will not be extending their stay beyond this week in the nation’s capital.

Many are calling for the return of Michigan National Guardsmen from Washington, D.C. due to deplorable living conditions and a lack of credible threats to the Capitol. Senate Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Jim Inhofe said in a statement he is “outraged” National Guardsmen are being asked to stay without specific information as to why.

In addition, numerous reports of guard members being served undercooked and rotten food surfaced last week, drawing more ire from elected officials. U.S. Congressman Jack Bergman called the treatment unacceptable. “Our troops don’t demand a 5-star resort or expensive food, but at a minimum, they deserve meals that are safe to consume. This is an embarrassment for all those responsible for the care of our troops, and must be met with full accountability.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer visited the National Guard troops last Friday and said she would not extend their stay beyond March 12th.
