LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – According to a new poll, there is strong support for a citizen-initiated proposal on the ballot that would limit Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s emergency powers.

The MRG poll results come as Whitmer declines to reinstate restrictions amid Michigan becoming the COVID-19 epicenter in the U.S.

The results show 63 percent of those polled supported limiting the governor’s emergency powers. Further data from the poll showed that Whitmer’s emergency orders and shutdowns ranked as “unpopular” with 18-34 year-olds, an age group which is more likely to vote for Democrat candidates.

Over the past year, Whitmer and her administration have ordered some of the strictest shutdowns in the country, including the closing of public school classrooms and restaurant dining rooms. She also suspended work for other industries including lawn maintenance and construction. Whitmer did this unilaterally and without the cooperation of the Legislature.

In October, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the 1945 and 1976 laws Whitmer used as the basis of her unending emergency powers and executive orders were unconstitutional. Within days, Whitmer cited a 1918 Spanish Flu law and continued to funnel her executive orders through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Gov. Whitmer has claimed credit for low COVID-19 cases but blamed her own constituents and former President Donald Trump for surges and mismanagement.

“It is not a policy problem that we have. It is a compliance problem that we have,” Whitmer said.

Whitmer and her teenaged daughter received the COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday at Ford Field.
