LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Michiganders who are fully vaccinated no longer have to wear a mask indoors or outdoors.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) updated the Gatherings and Mask Order to align with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest guidance on face coverings.

The new order goes into effect Saturday, May 15th.

A press release from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office states, “Under the updated MDHHS Gatherings and Mask Order, Michiganders who are outdoors will no longer need to wear a mask regardless of vaccination status. While indoors, fully vaccinated Michiganders will no longer need to wear a mask, but residents who are not vaccinated, or have not completed their vaccinations, must continue to wear a mask or face covering to protect themselves and others. After July 1, the broad indoor mask mandate will expire.”

The Whitmer Administration appears to still be putting the pressure on all eligible Michiganders to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Under the state’s “MI Vacc to Normal” campaign, 70 percent of all Michigan residents ages 16 years of age and older must be vaccinated in order for the state to fully reopen.

MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel, who secretly traveled to Florida while she and the governor urged Michiganders to stay home during spring break, said “I urge our residents to continue to be respectful of each other as we move forward.”
