DETROIT, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – James Craig, who has previously announced his intention to run as a Republican and unseat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, made a similar announcement on Tuesday.

The former Detroit Police Chief walked through a group of protestors and tried to speak above their chants and blow horns from a podium.

“I have got one thing to say. I’m running for governor of the state of Michigan,” Craig said.

Rumors of his candidacy surfaced in May when James announced his retirement from the force.

In July, James appeared on Fox News and said he intended to run for the state’s top job and launch an exploratory committee.

Craig described today’s announcement as “official” on his Facebook page.

The protestors shouted “Black Lives Matter” and “James Craig has got to go.”

At least 10 other Republicans are running for governor.
