LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Veto-proof legislation that shores up Michigan’s voting laws has cleared a procedural step.

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers approved a 100-word summary that will appear on the petition.

Secure MI Vote, the group behind the petition drive,  needs roughly 340,000 valid voter signatures and wants Michigan’s Legislature to enact the bill in 2022 rather than let it go to the ballot.

Among other things, the initiative would require prospective absentee voters to provide a copy of their photo I.D. or the last four digits of their Social Security number.
