LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – The Michigan Democratic Party is challenging the petition signatures of three top Republican candidates for governor.

Attorneys working on behalf of the Democrats are challenging the signature petitions of ex-Detroit Police Chief James Craig, former newscaster Tudor Dixon, and businessman Perry Johnson.

The move comes as a similar challenge happens within the Republican party.

A group tied to Dixon has challenged nominating petitions submitted by Craig.

They said he likely did not turn in enough valid signatures to qualify for the GOP primary.

The deadline to contest signatures is Tuesday.

Michigan voters will narrow down the field in the August 2 primary. The GOP winner will take on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in November.
