LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A new poll from Target Insyght/MIRS News shows the remaining five GOP Michigan gubernatorial hopefuls need more name recognition as they gear up for the state’s August 2nd primary election.

The poll found the leading candidate is Ryan D. Kelley. The real estate broker from Allendale Township received 19 percent support, while business executive Kevin Rinke came in second at 15 percent. Tudor Dixon, Garrett  Soldano, and Ralph Rebandt polled in single digits.

Target Insyght pollster Ed Sarpolus said Kelley is benefiting from the surname popularized by the late Attorney General Frank Kelley and numerous judges named “Kelly” or “Kelley” who’ve served on the bench throughout the years, according to MIRS News.

Last Thursday, the Board of State Canvassers disqualified five of the ten GOP governor candidates because a Bureau of Elections recommendation said invalid signatures kept them from meeting the 15,000 signature threshold.

Captain Michael Brown withdrew earlier that week. In addition , the board recommended that Former Police Chief James Craig, businessman Perry Johnson, Donna Brandenburg, and Michael Markey be kept off the ballot.

Over the weekend, Craig, Johnson, and Markey filed documents to challenge the board’s recommendations in court.
