GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – While the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) chose to fire Officer Christopher Schurr while he waits to be tried for murder in the death of a motorist, the Grand Rapids Police Officer’s Association (GRPOA) is stepping up to help him and his family.

According to a Facebook post, the GRPOA is asking people to “Stand with Officer Schurr” by praying for him, his family, and supporting his legal fight financially.

“City hall has abandoned Chris after serving Grand Rapids for 7 years,” the post said.

Last week, the GRPD fired Schurr after Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker charged him with second-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya on April 4th. Body camera footage shows Lyoya resisting arrest and trying to grab Schurr’s taser. Schurr said through his lawyer that he feared for his life when he shot Lyoya.

Later, toxicology results revealed Lyoya’s blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit. Schurr said he pulled over Lyoya because his plates didn’t match.

Since then, activists have demanded “justice” for Lyoya. They have forced the shutdown of three city commission meetings. In addition, the GRPD is investigating vandalism at the homes of several city officials.
