LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – With short staffing a reality all over Michigan, a growing trend seems to be offering big sign-on bonuses.

Businesses are using these bonuses to offer new hires a lucrative reason to join their team by giving them cash up front when they accept a job opening.

A search on the website Indeed for jobs including sign-on bonuses in Michigan yielded 23,333 job openings for people looking for an incentive to take on a new job. The listings included a wide variety of jobs including sales staff, delivery drivers, office cleaners, IT workers and security officers.

MediLodge of Leelanau, a long-term skilled nursing care center that also provides short-term rehabilitation, recently advertised they are hiring, offering skilled nurses a large $10K sign-on bonus.

According to Bridge Michigan, some Michigan schools are offering up to $10K to teachers to get them to sign up.

They counted 15 postings from schools who were offering bonuses during their research. Grand Rapids Public Schools held a job fair last week to fill about 310 open positions for teachers, cooks, custodians, bus drivers and other positions. They offered $1K sign-on bonuses to teachers, social workers, psychologists, nurses and counselors.

The TSA will be hosting hiring events in the Upper Peninsula in Bessemer today and Thursday for Northern Michigan airports, offering a $1K sign-on bonus to new hires, $500 at the start and another $500 after one year of service with a service agreement.

The sign-on bonuses can run anywhere from $1K to $25K depending on the kind of job it is and how desperate the company is to hire people although most of the bonuses are in the $1K to $2K range.
