LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Organizers of a petition drive to let Michiganders vote on an amendment enshrining abortion in the state Constitution, along with other broad range reproductive health care services, say their group has surpassed the required number of signatures.

Reproductive Freedom for All, which is comprised of groups such as Planned Parenthood, ACLU Michigan, and Michigan Voices, announced Monday they’ve collected an upwards of 754,000 signatures from residents in all of Michigan’s 83 counties.

If the petition signatures are certified, the measure will be put on the ballot in November.

According to the Reproductive Freedom for All website, the description of the ballot initiative is as follows: “This proposal will affirm that every person has the fundamental right to reproductive freedom, which involves the right to make and carry out decisions without political interference about all matters relating to pregnancy, including birth control, abortion, prenatal care, and childbirth.”

It goes on to say, “Specifically, this measure will ensure that all Michiganders have the right to safe and respectful care during birthing, everyone has the right to use temporary or permanent birth control, everyone has the right to continue or end a pregnancy pre-viability, and no one can be punished for having a miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion.”

A 1963 Michigan Supreme Court decision prohibits mothers from being punished for having an abortion.

A group called “Citizens to Support MI Women and Children” is warning Michigan residents about what they say is an “anything goes” extreme ballot proposal.

“The Reproductive Freedom for All constitutional amendment is not about protecting existing rights, but smuggling a radical proposal into the constitution that would repeal or drastically alter dozens of state laws. The amendment would fundamentally change the relationships between parents and children, as well as women and their doctors.”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel have pushed what some have called an “extreme pro-abortion” agenda in the weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade and returned abortion regulations from the federal level back to the states. Whitmer has repeatedly vowed to “fight like hell” when it comes to women being able to end a pregnancy up until the moment of birth.

The signatures still must be verified by the Bureau of Elections and validated by the Board of State Canvassers before the proposed amendment can appear on the Nov. 8 ballot.
