DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – An op-ed piece published in “The Detroit News” on Monday argues that Michigan voters deserve an up-close-and-personal town hall with the two women vying for the state’s top job.

Incumbent Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will square off against GOP gubernatorial pick Tudor Dixon on November 8.

In his op-ed, Bankole Thompson writes, “The newly minted Republican nominee, Tudor Dixon, and incumbent Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer must each make a compelling case about who is most capable to govern the state over the next four years. Voters have to seriously examine whether Dixon has what it takes to be the next chief executive of the state aside from being the pick of former President Donald Trump, or if Whitmer has done enough to merit another four years in office.”

Thompson argues job experience, or lack thereof, for both candidates is a pressing point.

“Dixon has never held elected office, and this is her first attempt to try to claim the top job in Michigan. Can she be trusted with no political experience? Whitmer has a very substantial public record, and she is not a political novice. Does she deserve a second term?”

In addition, Thompson states that speaking directly to voters in a town hall setting may prove more genuine than a debate with “canned answers.”
In 2018 when Whitmer ran against Bill Schuette, the two campaigns agreed to two debates in October of that year.
There is no word yet on debates this fall, but the Whitmer and Dixon campaigns may be waiting for the name of the GOP Lt. Governor pick, which is due by Friday to the Michigan GOP. The convention is scheduled next week.
