LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Board of Canvassers will review an abortion rights ballot initiative on Wednesday and determine whether it will go before voters in the November 8 election.

The proposed constitutional amendment aims to negate a 1931 Michigan abortion ban and enshrine the right to abortion through all nine months of pregnancy in the state constitution.

The state law has been mired in back-and-forth battles in the courts for several months. Currently, a state judge’s ruling is keeping prosecutors from charging abortion providers under the ban. A 1963 Michigan Supreme Court forbids the prosecution of mothers from having an abortion.

Last week, the Bureau of Elections verified the ballot initiative petition contained enough valid signatures for the amendment to qualify for the ballot and recommended that the state Board of Canvassers approve the measure.

The board does not always follow the bureau’s recommendations.
