PORT HURON, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The large water main that failed just outside of Port Huron won’t be fully back in service until next month. The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) says the pipe near their Lake Huron treatment plant has been closed since a leak was found August 13th.

GLWA officials said in early September that the 10-foot-diameter pipe should be up and running again by September 21, about six weeks after the leak was discovered.

While the pipe itself has been repaired, officials say the process of flushing and disinfecting the pipeline is taking longer than expected. The water main still had to be filled, which requires 81 million gallons of water, and then flushed and disinfected.

Water has still been flowing to communities normally serviced by the water transmission main, but water pressure has been affected for residents and businesses in the area since mid-August.

A new target date for operations to resume is October 5th.
