SAULT SAINT MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Interlake Steamship Company has added one more freighter to its fleet, and visitors were on hand in The Soo on Monday to catch a glimpse.

Dozens of boat aficionados gathered at Rotary Park in Sault Ste. Marie on Labor Day to watch the Mark W. Barker pass its fleet mate, the James R. Barker, on its way to Superior, Wisconsin with a load of road salt.

The 639-foot long Mark W. Barker was christened on Sept. 1 in Cleveland. It was built at Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin from 2019-22. That makes it the first American-built freighter in 36 years.

Interlake Steamship Company has a total of 10 freighters and is the largest privately-held US-flagged fleet on the Great Lakes.
