SAULT SAINT MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Luce Mackinac Alger Schoolcraft District Health Department announced the possible find of harmful algae blooms detected in multiple locations on South Manistique Lake in the Upper Peninsula.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) contacted the county department to say the blooms are suspected to be blue-green algae. It can cause minor illness to humans, but can be deadly to pets.

Health officials recommend visitors to the lake avoid activities in the water and keep pets from going in or consuming lake water where algae blooms are visible. This is recommended until water testing is complete or the bloom breaks up.
