IONIA, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – It’s been a week since an elderly Michigan woman was shot in Lake Odessa while canvassing for Right to Life of Michigan about Proposal 3, the Reproductive Freedom for All Proposal.
The proposal, which will appear on Michigan ballots in November, would enshrine certain reproductive
and abortion “rights” up until the moment of birth into the Michigan Constitution.

Since then, Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer has been mum on the event with no tweets about any condemnation concerning the violent attack. Right to Life Michigan sent out their press release about the shooting on September 24th and Whitmer was tweeting out answers to a pop quiz about Michigan trivia on that day and thanking her supporters for fighting for reproductive freedom and keeping abortion legal.
Many of Whitmer’s daily tweets involve provocative wording in statements like the tweet she made the day after the shooting where she said, “Abortion is a fundamental right – and I’m fighting like hell to protect access to care in Michigan.”
President Joe Biden has also been using incendiary rhetoric as well. He gave a divisive speech about MAGA Republicans on September 2nd, saying “Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the foundation of our Republic.”
Michigan News Source reached out to the governor’s office about the shooting and to get a statement about condemning it but they did not respond by press time.
David Kallman, Senior Legal Counsel, of the Great Lakes Justice Center announced on “The Steve Gruber Show” on Tuesday that he is representing the shooting victim. She contacted the law firm to discuss what happened and talk about whether she needed legal representation.
Kallman said that his office is there to help if she needs to file a civil suit as well as representing her for the media and any other needs that may arise. Kallman said on The Steve Gruber Show, “The lady has hired us (Great Lakes Justice Center) to represent her in this matter so we’re just getting into it this morning and going to be gathering more information and getting more details which I’m sure we’ll be able to share later this week with your audience.”
When asked by Gruber why the woman was shot and what she was shot with, Kallman said, “It was a long-barreled gun the way our client describes it.”

Kallman also corrected the media reports about the shooting by saying “[The shooting victim] was not in an argument as it’s been portrayed in the press like she was somehow causing this herself – that she got shot because of something she did…That’s the implication from the media reports I’ve seen. That’s a flat out lie. That is not true. She never raised her voice, she never got in an argument…and she was walking away when the homeowner told her to leave the property and got irate and violent and confrontative with our client…and so she was leaving and got shot when she was leaving.”
Kallman believes, from his discussions with his client, that the shooting victim was in a conversation with a woman who is believed to be the homeowner. After that, she was approached by someone different as she left.
“She was discussing things with a woman,” Kallman said. “A man came around the side of the house who she never had a single word with…never talked to the guy at all…and he’s the one who shot her.”
Kallman said that the victim, who was by herself, never raised her voice or argued with the homeowner even though she was very hostile and aggressive towards her. When the elderly woman was asked to leave the property, she walked down the stairs and was on the sidewalk, almost to the street, when the man shot her. Because the shot didn’t knock her down, she was able to get to her car and drive herself to the police department to report what happened.
Kallman told Gruber that he is surprised that Governor Whitmer hasn’t said anything about the shooting. He said, “It’s unbelievable that somebody gets shot like this and the governor doesn’t come out and condemn it, this kind of violence.”
He continued, “I would think that those on all sides would want to come out and condemn this type of action, this type of activity, and calm the waters…this is ridiculous…people need to be able to discuss Proposal 3 without having riots and fighting and shootings and stabbings or anything else…I don’t know where any of these folks on the pro abortion side are. Why aren’t they coming out and condemning this? They’re saying nothing about it.”
Michigan News Source reached out to Right to Life of Michigan about the attack and how their volunteers are feeling about what happened. Anna Visser, Director of Communication/Education for Right to Life of Michigan, said, “Everyone is very committed to stopping this proposal from going through to our state Constitution so we’re very thankful to that. Even the volunteer that was attacked is still wanting to continue to volunteer so we’re very grateful to have a loyal base of volunteers and supporters who can see the importance in this and the messaging.”
As for the prosecution of the person who was allegedly responsible for the shooting, Visser said, “We believe that the person that attacked this volunteer should be held accountable. No one should be threatened for what they believe in. We obviously don’t know the motive behind the attack but we can assume that it’s likely to do with the materials that were passed out or the fact that she was on their property but no one should be threatened for canvassing or for
passing out educational materials…That is her right according to freedom of speech and she should be able to do that safely and freely.”
This kind of violence, or even the threat of violence, doesn’t appear to be an isolated incident as it relates to abortion rights supporters.
Kallman points to another client at a pregnancy center in Lansing who has been threatened by the group “Jane’s Revenge” who has been putting up signs and threatening the center with violence.
Kallman says, “It’s unbelievable the level of violence…the actions by these pro-abortion folks…they can’t even stomach anybody opposing them or giving rational reasons for not supporting Proposal 3.”
When Gruber asked if he would call the shooter a “domestic terrorist,” Kallman said, “Using their definitions, absolutely, but it certainly is attempted murder and a number of other crimes.”
Another conservative was shot in North Dakota recently. A man allegedly murdered a teenager by hitting him with his car in North Dakota because he said he belonged to a “Republican extremist group.” It has been reported that he admitted to striking a pedestrian and he is now out on bail.
Michigan News Source contacted the MSP to see if they are investigating the Lake Odessa shooting as a hate crime and we were contacted back by Spl/Lt. Michelle Robinson, Sixth District Public Information Officer. She said, “We are gathering all facts into this incident. It will be the decision of the Ionia County Prosecutor as to what, if any, charges may be brought upon the individuals involved. Because this is an on-going investigation, I cannot comment on any of the evidentiary elements involved.”
According to a statement by Ionia County Prosecutor Kyle Butler, the Michigan State Police (MSP), Lakeview Post, is in the process of investigating the incident. Butler says, “All immediate parties involved in the situation have: been identified, cooperated, and been interviewed by the police. The firearm alleged to have been used, has been seized by the MSP. However, the investigation is not complete and is ongoing. Because of this, no warrant request has been submitted to my office and any decision on this case will not come until the finer details of facts relevant to this situation are known to the highest level of certainty possible.”
