LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) –Starting at 8:46 a.m. on Sunday and continuing throughout the day, the nation will remember the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against the United States and honor the victims and first responders who lost their lives.

Events nationwide will commemorate the moment the planes struck the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon, and crashed in a Pennsylvania field. Here are a few events happening in Michigan:

  • The 9/11 Community Day of Remembrance and Scout Salute, which has been held annually from sunrise to sunset since 2002, is scheduled to start in Grand Rapids, at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum (GRFPM) on Sunday, Sept. 11.
  • Muskegon LST 393, 560 Mart St., will run from noon – 2:30 p.m. Speakers at the LST 393 include state Rep. Terry Sabo and state Sen. Jon Bumstead.
  • The USS Silversides event, at 1346 Bluff St. in Muskegon, begins with an opening ceremony at 3 p.m., with activities continuing until 5 p.m. U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer David Cucovatz will speak at 4 p.m.
  • The Grand Traverse Metro Fire Station will begin with the Fire Honor Guard and Boy Scouts lowering flags to half-staff at 8:30 a.m. and continues with Scouts and community members saluting the flag until 9 a.m.
  • The USS Edson, located at the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum, 1680 Martin St. in Bay City, will honor those who died on 9/11 from 10 a.m. until noon.
