LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Animal advocates in Michigan are caring for pets displaced by the recent hurricanes.

Two dozen dogs that were housed in Florida and Puerto Rico shelters were taken to the SPCA of Southwest Michigan. Officials say all of the dogs were in the shelters prior to the storms and need forever homes.

The dogs and cats onboard the flight were cleared from storm-damaged shelters with help from The Sato Project to make room for the animals displaced by the storms and needing care and housing until reunited with their local guardians.

All pets have been in shelters at least 30 days and are identified as abandoned, not simply lost, according to the non-profit Wings of Rescue, a charitable organization that flies abandoned, homeless and otherwise at-risk pets from overcrowded shelters and disaster areas. The SPCA is asking those who would like to foster a dog to contact their Kalamazoo office.
