LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A report from five different climate crisis groups says Michigan should stop building gas-fired power plants immediately and require consumers to buy all-electric home and building heaters by 2035.

In addition, the report advocates only allowing electric vehicles to be sold by 2030.

Environmental advocates argue Michigan needs to cut its greenhouse gas emissions faster than state leaders have planned.

The report argues that state authorities should adopt stronger climate policies to speed up the complete decarbonization of the economy to meet a 2050 carbon-neutral goal. Members of the climate crisis groups argue Michigan is not on track to meet its 2030 goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 52%.

In this report, the Michigan Environmental Council, Natural Resources Defense Council, 5 Lakes Energy, and RMI (formerly Rocky Mountain Institute) offer the Climate Solutions Pathway. The groups argue their plan is the most feasible and ambitious set of policies that would meet Michigan’s goals.
