ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Holding Iowa scoreless for the first three quarters, Michigan came away with a 27-14 victory over the Hawkeyes in Iowa. Iowa scored 14 points in the fourth quarter but Michigan’s offense kept the pressure securing the win.

J.J. McCarthy said after the game, “This win was huge for us. It was our first road game, two it’s coming into Kinney (Iowa home stadium), and three there is a good ball team across from us. It was huge for us to do what we wanted to do with what the defense gave us and come out of here with a win, honestly.”

McCarthy led a balanced attack with 327 yards of offense throwing for 155 yards while the team gained 203 yards on the ground. His one touchdown pass was to Donovan Edwards. Blake Corum finished with 133 yards rushing with a touchdown. Ronnie Bell recorded the other rushing touchdown.

Michigan shut out Iowa in the first half scoring 13 points. Bell was the first score from 16-yards out with 9:53 left in the first quarter. Jake Moody came through with two big field goals in the second quarter. His first was 44-yards out (8:28) and then he had a 35-yard field goal with just nine seconds left in the half for the 13-0 lead at the half.

Edwards caught a pass from McCarthy from 12-yards away for the second touchdown of the day for Michigan making it 20-0, with eight minutes to go in the third. Michigan kept control of the third quarter not allowing any movement from Iowa until late.

Iowa took over the ball at the end of third quarter and started a push down the field. Just under a minute into the fourth quarter, Kaleb Johnson punched in their first touchdown from two-yards out to cut the lead to 13, 20-7. Forcing Michigan to a three-and-out on the next possession, Iowa took their momentum and went with it.

Starting at their own 17-yard line, Iowa took over with 12:37 left in the game. Taking almost seven minutes off the clock, they drove down to the Michigan eight-yard line. Michigan’s defense stiffened up and stopped Iowa short on a fourth-and-two denying the Hawkeyes of cutting the lead to one score.

“They were getting into a rhythm, you know, though, but we didn’t blink though, or flinch, and got that stop to really build some momentum. They had the momentum but we got it back,” says player Jaylen Harrell.

Michigan is now 6-0 and heads to Indiana next Saturday for another Big Ten game.
