Gift of Life Michigan and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are joining forces to help add more names to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.
Under the agreement, the DNR will pose the Donor Registry question to people who purchase or renew their hunting and fishing licenses in the confirmation email after web-based sales and certain in-store sales.
Usually, residents sign up on the Michigan Organ Donor Registry through the Michigan Secretary of State, but changes at the SOS branch offices have pushed more transactions online. This has slowed the rate of new registrations.
There are more than 2,400 people in Michigan waiting for an organ transplant, and more than 100,000 people in the U.S. who are on the waiting list.
