“I want to thank the incredible Michigan families who have opened their homes and hearts to adoption, and I am proud to highlight just a few incredible stories during Adoption Month in Michigan,” said Gov. Whitmer in a press release. Every child deserves a loving home, and we will continue working together to ensure that all our kids have a strong solid foundation and strong start for the rest of their lives.” Whitmer’s proclamation can be read here.

State data indicates roughly 10,000 children are in Michigan’s foster care system, including more than 200 children who are still waiting for their “forever family.”

Gov. Whitmer’s proclamation comes four months after she signed the state’s budget and vetoed $2 million in tax credits for adoptive families. In addition, Gov. Whitmer nixed $10 million for programs which promoted adoption alternatives to abortion, as well as $1.5 million for pregnancy resource centers.

In October, the Homes for Black Children was set to close at the hands of the Whitmer administration until a Michigan News Source article highlighted its plight and the administration put the closing on hold and is working with HBC to help them with their recovery.

Jacquelynn Moffet, “I told Michigan News Source the talks with the governor’s office, “seemed to go really well” and “seemed promising” but emphasized she will likely not have specific answers about the HBC future until after the holidays.
