LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Democrats are taking the reins in Lansing amid full party control for the first time since 1983, and they are electing new leadership in both the state house and senate to kick off their tenure.

Terms for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and state representatives and senators will officially begin on January 1, 2023.

The voting for new party leadership took place on Thursday afternoon. State Senator Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids) has been elected as the Senate’s first female majority leader.

Representative Joe Tate (D-Detroit) will serve as the House speaker. He is the first African-American to be elected to that role.

Democrats elected Rep. Abraham Aiyash as the first Muslim Majority Floor Leader.
