LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – For the first time in 40 years, the Democrat Party will have a stronghold in Michigan.

Democrats swept the top of the ticket in the Nov. 8 election which ended in second terms for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

In addition, Democrats in Michigan took control of both legislative chambers.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who has boasted about working with anyone who wants to find solutions, will now be working with her own party’s majority. Democrats in Lansing are expected to work on progressive pet projects including gun control and upending right-to-work laws.

It is likely that both Whitmer and Nessel will continue their legal battle to shut down Enbridge Energy’s Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac. The company, which provides much of the propane used for heating much of Michigan, is moving ahead on its $500 million project to build a tunnel to encase the pipeline. Repeated motions by Nessel’s team to move the lawsuit from federal to state court have failed.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has not responded to repeated questions from Michigan News Source about when she will clean up the state’s voter rolls, which contains roughly 25,000 decedents.

Meanwhile, Michigan Democrats do not seem to be resting on their laurels. In a letter to supporters, the Michigan Democratic Party looked ahead to 2024. “[Former President Donald] Trump isn’t done with Michigan yet,” the email said in part. “Michigan will be a top target for Trump along the presidential campaign trail, which is why we need to keep working to organize, train, and build to help Michigan Democrats win.”
