WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – While most of the country hunkered down for blizzard-like conditions or finished last minute Christmas shopping on Friday, The House finished what the Senate started by approving a $1.7 trillion in so-called “omnibus spending.”

The Senate passed the 4,155-page legislative tome on Tuesday, while the House approved the measure on Friday. The bill has been touted as a way to keep the government running and avoid a shutdown, but it also included millions of dollars for Planned Parenthood, feeding and sheltering illegal immigrants, and another $45 million for Ukraine.

Michigan Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, both Democrats, voted in favor of the bill on Tuesday. Eighteen Republicans voted with them, bringing the vote total to 68-29.

Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) highlighted the “pork” in the bill with a post on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Congressman Bill Huizinga (R-Holland Township) explained to his constituents why he voted against the bill even though many of his Republican colleagues in the House threw their support behind it. He called on those in his own political party to “fix this broken appropriations process” in the new year.
