Fire Destroys Historic Bridge in Shiawassee County

DURAND, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Fire destroyed an historic bridge in Shiawassee County on Saturday.

Officials said the flames spread quickly along the Newberry Road wooden bridge and caused it to crash onto the railroad tracks below.

Firefighters from seven departments assisted at the scene.

No one was injured in the fire or the collapse of the bridge. Investigators suspect the fire may have started underneath.
Officials said the fire triggered a major backup for trains, saying some were delayed all the way to Chicago.
