DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Friday marks a holiday you might not have heard about but deserves recognition all the same. It’s National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day and there’s nowhere that is celebrated more than at UglyChristmasSweater.com located in Walled Lake, Michigan, about a 40-minute drive northwest of Detroit.

Michigan News Source reached out to Fred Hajjar, co-founder of Ugly Christmas Sweater Inc., about what the holiday means to them and he said, “Ugly Christmas Sweater Day is very meaningful. We consider ourselves part of the reason why the day exists. Ugly Christmas sweaters were once considered trendy and now we think they are here to stay. They bring joy to others, create conversation, and help get people into the holiday spirit. We plan on wearing our sweaters to spread the Christmas spirit. Merry Christmas!”

Celebrated on the third Friday in December every year, this year’s holiday is celebrated on Friday, December 16th. National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day is the day to wear your most ridiculous and hideous Christmas sweater that you have in your closet. The folks who came up with National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day say it’s a day to proudly support your favorite ugly Christmas sweater for the ENTIRE day…regardless of the circumstances. The holiday website says, “Rock your sweater all day and all night, from the time you wake up till the time you sleep. No breaks. No copouts. No excuses. The sweater must stay on.”

Does that mean that heart surgeons and Pentagon staff should observe the day as well? We contacted the Department of Defense to see if they were going to allow staff to observe the holiday but they did not return comment at the time this story went to press.

If you see an ugly Christmas sweater today (or any other day), chances are that it might have come from UglyChristmasSweater.com. Their massive and creative selection of Christmas sweaters has everything from artwork of Santa, elves, and reindeer (even in 3-D) to characters and themes you love like Top Gun, Elf, Wu-Tang Clan, Todd and Margo (National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation), Star Wars, SpongeBob Squarepants, Mickey Mouse, sharks, unicorns and more. They even had a Trump sweater that debuted after the 2016 election that was a best-seller.

There are also matching sweaters for couples and many other products available like slippers, pajamas, plush toys and lawn ornaments. They keep up on the trends and have been able to supply their warehouse with a plethora of different options with the help of licensing deals with Disney, Netflix and Warner Bros.

Something that’s turned out to be a pretty big hit at the company is their create-your —own-sweater and other personalized items in their custom section. The create-your-own-sweater product turned out to be quite popular, amassing a lot of requests from corporations. Ugly Christmas Sweater Inc. has even worked with big companies like Frito Lay, Volkswagen and Twitter.

Needless to say, as busy as the company is all year long, some months are even more busy than others. They processed more than 150,000 orders last December. Helping fill those orders in their 42,000 sq. ft. warehouse are 50 employees that also help operate other e-commerce businesses, with an additional 20 part-time seasonal workers. They have five graphic designers on staff to come up with the cool but “ugly” designs. There is also an additional warehouse that is 31,000 sq. feet that is used for product customization, printing and manufacturing.

Their sweaters have been covered by the national press and seen on TV, worn by Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Kelly Ripa, Ryan Seacrest and other celebrities. With only nine days left until Christmas, Fred says that you still have time to order the Ugly Christmas Sweaters now and get them by Christmas by using one of their options on the home page, including overnight delivery.

The business was launched in 2012 and is run by three siblings, Fred, Mark and Vanessa Hajjar. Fred handles forecasting, budgeting and purchasing sweaters in addition to helping with new designs and managing the website and facility. Mark purchases sweaters and other Christmas novelty items, is part of the creative new concept process, leads the sweater customization process and fulfillment management. Vanessa helps with creative ideas, customer service and sweater customization.

The company, which brings in millions in revenue every year, is an online-only business. In the past, they had operated 20 kiosks and pop up locations but decided to focus on internet sales instead.

Fred, who was a student at MSU, has been involved in online retail since 2001. He started an online business TV Store Online where he sells t-shirts and other products connected to popular movies and TV shows. This was a side gig in addition to pursuing an engineering job. But it only took about six months before the online business took off and expanded after that. And along with his brother Mark, Fred also started a costume-manufacturing division and was able to sell costumes to places like Party City.

It was in 2012 when the brothers saw ugly Christmas sweaters going for $500 a pop on Ebay. After that, they bought the UglyChristmasSweater.com domain, did some successful search engine optimization, teamed up with some social media influencers and, just like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, they continue to bring joy to millions and will go down in history.
