LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A new Michigan law will pump up security measures on gas pump credit card readers to prevent hackers from placing skimming devices, or skimmers, on the pumps.

Skimmers steal the personal information of the person pumping gas.

The new law amends the state’s Weights and Measures Act to require additional security measures on gas pumps to prevent tampering.

Currently, gas pumps in Michigan only need a piece of pressure sensitive security tape over the panel that provides access to the credit card reader.

Beginning in 2023, gas pumps will need more security measures for pay-at-the-pump credit card readers. Those measures include a device that shuts down the pump if someone tampers with it and a device to replace the lock from the manufacturer.

In addition, the new law requires an encryption system that prevents skimmers from accessing credit card information.
