DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Taking an early 2-0 lead in the first period, the Detroit Red Wings held off the Columbus Blue Jackets for the two-goal win, 4-2. Detroit is now 12-7-5 with 29 points on the year.

Austin Czarnik and Dominik Kubalik recorded goals in the first period to make it 2-0. Czarnik scored an even-strength goal at 6:34 as Olli Maatta assisted on the goal. At 17:36, Kubalik took advantage of the power play when Filip Hronek sent a one-timer to him making it 2-0.

Ville Husso made 32 saves in the win said, “It was a really good start for us. Exactly how we wanted. Even when they came back, we still had the energy and push to make it 4-2.”

Lucas Raymond went on a 5-on-3 for a sharp angle goal at 7:03 in the second period as Detroit went ahead, 3-0. Columbus was finally on the board at 16:10 to cut the lead to two, 3-1, in the second period.

It became too close in the third period as Columbus found the net early (1:58) to pull within one, 3-2. Just three minutes later, Oskar Sundgvist won a faceoff sending the puck to Matta who slapped it over to Andrew Copp for the insurance goal, 4-2, at 6:08. That is all that was needed as Detroit took the win.

Czarnik said after the win, “Anytime you can start with a win on the road that’s what you want. Now, we go to three hard places to play with really good teams. We just need to build off this and keep going.”

Detroit heads to Tampa Bay on Tuesday night for their second game of a four-game road trip. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
