LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Families in Michigan who have received additional food assistance benefits in response to COVID-19 will stop seeing extra payments in March.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service said the extra payments of The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) were earmarked to help low-income families throughout the pandemic, but that “the significant cost of living increase to Social Security benefits that took effect on Jan. 1, 2023” is forcing the stop of extra benefit payments.

Eligible Michigan families received an extra $95 in monthly payments as part of the SNAP expansion during the last two years.

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), food assistance benefits are loaded onto Bridge Cards and do not expire at the end of the month they are issued.

Regular benefit amounts resume in March.
