GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Those who shop at Meijer may soon find smaller versions of the store in their towns after the supermarket just opened its first new stores in Michigan’s Macomb and Orion Townships.
According to Meijer, the condensed layout is designed to simplify the shopping experience, from the traditional 150,000 square feet supercenters to smaller outlet stores ranging between 75,000 and 90,000 square feet.

These new stores will feature the “essential” categories such as fresh produce and grocery; in-store meat cutters; a bakery equipped with in-store cake decorators; a full-service deli; in-store and drive-thru pharmacy; health and beauty care; baby, pets, and household essentials; card, party and floral, Supermarket News said.
Like the supermarkets, the new stores offer parking wrapped around a singular corner entrance to maximize the number of parking spaces near the door, Meijer said.
“We’re excited to provide our customers with yet another way to shop,” Group Vice President of Foods at Meijer, Don Sanderson said in a statement. “This new concept store will not only provide our customers with everything they need on their weekly shopping trip, but also a quick and easy solution for when they realize they left the key ingredient off their list while cooking dinner.”
The company also wanted to highlight its support for local groups, and donated $10,000 to the Lake Orion area Village Food Pantry at a preview of the store. The Village Food Pantry is a partnership between Canterbury Village and Woodside Bible Church.
“We look forward to seeing these new stores further our mission of enriching lives in the communities we serve, not just by offering convenient shopping solutions and positive economic impact, but also as strong and active community partners,” Meijer President and CEO Rick Keyes said in a statement.
The Grand Rapids-based retailer has more than 260 superstores in six states including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Wisconsin.
