LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The National Education Association (NEA) and its Michigan branch (MEA) appear to be in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Critical Race Theory (CRT) game for the long haul.

The January 2023 issue of NEA Today published an article titled, “Are you Biased? Yes, You Are.” The article by Brenda Alvarez addresses implicit bias, which she describes as “Unconscious attitudes and stereotypes that people have toward marginalized groups and/or People of Color.”

Alvarez writes, “Implicit bias. Microinvalidations. Microagressions. Say any of these words and people usually get defensive…Everyone has implicit bias. It’s what you do with that awareness that can help give rise to thriving learning environments for your students.”

The NEA also published the article on its Facebook page. While it received expected praise, one commenter wrote, “Aren’t you showing implicit bias by saying others have implicit bias?”

In Michigan, the training continues at the local level through the MEA’s Center for Leadership and Learning. Information obtained by Michigan News Source says the MEA is hosting roundtable discussions for teachers who identify as LGBTQUIA+.

The invitation says the four scheduled discussions are a “safe and welcoming atmosphere, regardless of how you identify!”
