DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – It took just 25 seconds into overtime for Andrew Copp to net the game winning goal as Detroit swept the season series over San Jose, 3-2. Coop took a loose puck in the San Jose crease and turned it into the winning goal for his second career NHL overtime goal.

Copp says, “For parts of the game, we were really good. Then there were parts where we kind of went to sleep and let them back into it. We stuck with it and won the game, but the game ended up being a lot more complicated then it needed to.”

Dylan Larkin put Detroit up, 1-0, with his 400th career NHL goal at 2:17 in the second period. San Jose struck back at 7:58 on a curl around goal to tie the game at one. Just over eight minutes later, Michael Rasmusssen scored from the right face-off circle burying a shot quickly to retake the lead, 2-1. Just before the period ended, San Jose tied it at two with seven seconds left before intermission.

During the second intermission, head coach Derek Lalonde spoke to his team calmly. He commented after the game saying, “It could have been a yelling-and-screaming-type moment. I’ve probably only had one or two of those this year and they’ve all worked, so I didn’t want to waste on. But I was like, ‘Guys, this hasn’t been us.”

That pep talk worked for a scoreless third period as Detroit forced the overtime. That’s went Copp stepped up and won the game for Detroit.

In the game, Ville Husso had 28 saves on 30 shots for his 50th career NHL win.

The Red Wings are now 20-18-8 with 48 points.
