SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The shipping season is over at the Soo Locks.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed the locks on Monday for maintenance work. The Poe Lock will reopen on  March 25; the MacArthur Lock set to reopen on April 24.

In addition, work will continue on the new Super Lock. It’s slated to be in operation by 2030.

Officials say more than 4,500 ships go through Soo Locks between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, with each of them carrying up to 80 million tons of cargo.
