According to public records, the Michigan Secretary of State office denied 21,652 custom plates in 2022. Examples of rejected plates included DEM0NIC, DIARHEA, 2B00BS, and H0TDAMN.

Officials pointed out that some of the denied plates include lewd or sexual content, euphemisms for drugs and alcohol, opinions on politicians, or curse words. In addition, state law bans custom plates that interfere with the ability of law enforcement to identify the plates or conflict with Michigan’s license plate number system.
