EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – East Lansing Public Schools will hire three unarmed security officers to patrol its high school, and students will see them on patrol by March 13.
The move comes after students and parents pleaded for several months for the district to do something about the growing violence at the school. In addition, officials will consider hiring a certified police officer to work as a school resource officer.

The district has finalized a deal with Grand Rapids-based DK Security; the officers will be tasked with supervision of hallways, bathrooms and the lunch room. One security officer will also provide supervision during after-school hours.
The school district asked for input from students, staff, families and community members regarding safety enhancement.
Administrators said they are still reviewing the listed recommendations but said the high school campus is seeing new upgrades in additional cameras, and alarms and are working to hire three security staff members.
The February 13 mass shooting at neighboring MSU is not lost on the district, either. The school district is continuing to partner with area resources to offer counseling services to students.
