DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers stopped 100 handguns at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport security checkpoints in 2022, an increase of six weapons over the 94 detected in 2021.

“Bringing a firearm to the checkpoint is an expensive, dangerous mistake that far too many people are making,” said Michigan TSA Federal Security Director Steve Lorincz. “Our TSA officers are doing a fantastic job preventing weapons from making their way onboard aircraft, but the responsibility falls to passengers to pack smart and keep prohibited items out of their baggage.”

Other airports around the state saw fewer weapons pass through checkpoints compared to the previous year. TSA agents at Flint Bishop Airport caught three firearms in 2022 compared to four in 2021. Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids seized 12 guns in 2022, half the number in 2021. Meanwhile, TSA agents at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City uncovered two guns in 2022 compared to five the previous year.

TSA officials say the penalty for bringing weapons to the airport increased and can reach as high as $14,950.
