DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – It’s Paczki Day! To celebrate Fat Tuesday, many Michigan bakeries—Catholic or otherwise—will be serving up this sweet Polish treat.

Paczki (pronounced, much to the English speaker’s dismay, “POONCH-kee”) are a firm, yeasty pastry filled with jelly, typically made from prunes. Other flavors include apricot, lemon, blueberry, raspberry, and custard. The singular form of the noun is an uncommonly used “paczek,” pronounced “PON-check,” but most English speakers default to the plural paczki.

Paczki Day corresponds to a Catholic day of celebration before Lent, as it is the last day for the devout to enjoy typical foods before the traditional 40 days of selective fasting prior to Easter. Not everyone in Michigan celebrates Lent, but many will be savoring paczki today. Back in January, Eater Detroit published a full list of bakeries that will be serving the treat—many of which require customers to order in well advance so they can ensure they’ll have enough supplies.

You might think to look for paczki in bakeries, but that’s not the only place you might find them. In metro Detroit, Dos Locos Tacos offered a small batch of paczkis courtesy of their new pastry chef, Maryrose Moses. A nearby traditional Polish restaurant, Pietrzyk Pierogi, began accepting pre-orders as far back as January 25 for members of its Pierogi of the Month Club.

Some of Michigan’s best-known paczki shops are located in Hamtramck, popularly known as Michigan’s “Poletown.” Hamtramck’s New Martha Washington Bakery used to be the bakery of choice for Detroiters seeking paczki, but it has since been replaced by the taco shop, which still dutifully offers paczkis to the hungry—specifically, the hungry pre-orderers.

If your mouth is watering, but you can’t make it to Detroit, Pure Michigan published a list of bakeries around Michigan that will be offering the Polish dessert. Some listings are out of dat (for one thing, the defunct New Martha Washington Bakery still heads the list) so call in advance to ensure you won’t be disappointed.
