Senate Bill 90 would extend Michigan law to protect residents from hair-based discrimination by adding language into the state’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on hair texture and race-based hairstyles. Such hairstyles include braids, dreadlocks, twists and afros.

“How you choose to wear your hair shouldn’t hinder your success in school or the workplace,” Sen. Anthony said at a press conference this week.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer offered her support of Sen. Anthony’s bill on Twitter.

Some responded to the announcement of the bill with skepticism.
