LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source)- Thursday afternoon saw former President Trump indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on more than 30 undisclosed counts related to business fraud. This is the result of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation of Trump in connection with his alleged role in making hush money payments to adult film star, Stormy Daniels.

As the word of the indictment spread, politicians all over the country, including in Michigan, were responding to what happened. Although Bridge Michigan reports that Michigan Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer won’t be commenting on the Trump indictment and will instead be deferring to the Manhattan DA’s office, many others in Michigan on both sides of the political aisle have weighed in.

The Michigan GOP tweeted, “It is a dark day in American history when government agencies willingly target individual citizens for political purposes. Today it is President Trump, tomorrow it could be any one of us.”

Kristina Karamo tweeted something similar from her account as chairwoman of the Michigan GOP. She said, “Our government is increasingly being weaponized against citizens. Today it will be President Trump, tomorrow it will be you.”

Michigan GOP Congressman Bill Huizenga tweeted, “This unprecedented action by the Manhattan DA is much more about politics than policy or legal standing. Chasing headlines through political prosecution makes a mockery of our justice system.”

Michigan GOP Congressman Jack Bergman said DA Bragg was pursuing a “politically motivated witch hunt” as part of an “endless quest to destroy former President Donald Trump and those who support him.” He went on to say in a statement, “This is unacceptable and will cause irreversible damage to our Justice system. The American People deserve immediate transparency and truth from the Manhattan DA in this matter.”

Michigan GOP Congressman Tim Walberg said on Twitter that the indictment is the result of “activist prosecutors” like Bragg who create “soft-on-crime laws, fueling the crime wave.”

He went on to say, “It’s disgraceful that violent crime is acceptable to Bragg, but he’s willing to overreach with prosecutorial discretion and go after rivals.” He also wrote that the House GOP “will not tolerate it.”

State Rep. Matt Maddock (R-Milford) said in a text message to the Detroit News, “It’s no surprise that the banana republic leftist elites are busy attacking the ONLY leader who has demonstrated that he will fight back against their tyranny…Trump will prevail but our justice system may not.”

Former GOP gubernatorial candidate, Tudor Dixon, tweeted a photo of herself with Trump and said, “The indictment of President Trump is a clear manipulation of our justice system by Dems to attack a political opponent. Far-left prosecutors should be focused on locking up violent criminals instead of pursuing political retribution against a former POTUS & leading ‘24 candidate.”

Even former GOP Rep. Peter Meijer of Grand Rapids Township, who voted to impeach Trump after the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol, wasn’t happy with the Trump indictment. He told The Detroit News, “We are crossing a dangerous Rubicon for our democracy because a soft-on-crime DA needed to fulfill a campaign pledge to go after Trump, even on such a pathetic set of charges. This is a moment we will look back on as uniquely corrosive and destructive for our Republic.”

Democrats, for the most part, don’t see anything wrong with Bragg’s investigation or the grand jury indictment of Trump. State Rep. Betsy Coffia (D-Traverse City) tweeted, “No one is above the law. Right?”

The Michigan Democratic Party sent out an email to their supporters with the following statement: “Team: Multiple reports say former president Donald Trump was indicted today in New York over a hush money payment. This is the first time in American history that a former president faces criminal charges which means a New York grand jury believes there is enough evidence to charge Trump with a crime.”

They go on to say, “Trump prepared his MAGA extremists earlier this month, warning his supporters that he would be arrested and to ‘PROTEST, PROTEST, PROTEST!!!’ Here’s the thing: Facing criminal charges and inciting a riot won’t be enough to stop Trump from running for President in 2024 and he knows this.”

At the end, the Michigan Democrats ask for donations by saying, “The only way we can stop him (Trump) from sitting in the White House again is by preparing right now to stop him and the extremists who follow him at the ballot box in 2024.”

U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) tweeted, “No one is above the law. Not even a former, twice-impeached President of the United States.

U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Ann Arbor) tweeted, “All Americans deserve and are entitled to equal justice under the law and I implore everyone to remain calm and peaceful. We are a nation of laws and due process, and now our judicial system will do its job.”

Democratic Congressman Dan Kildee said in a statement, “In America, no one is above the law, no matter your power, prestige or position.”

Kildee went on to echo the constitutional protections of the law by saying, “The former president, like all Americans, deserves due process and should be considered innocent until proven guilty.”
