LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Newly elected Michigan Republican Chair Kristina Karamo announced recently that the state party is deeply in debt to the tune of about $460,000. She made the announcement more than a week ago at a Muskegon County event where she said, “The party is in debt. $460,000. So that is something we’re working through.”

She continued “But we do have funding to get started and get our initial operations going. Hopefully, the former chair will be gracious enough to pay that off.”

Ron Weiser, the former GOP Chair, has not promised to do so. The Detroit News reported that Weiser said in a statement, “A relatively small amount of debt left over that represents less than 4% of total revenues” and added, “Given the small percentage involved, I am confident the new administration will be able to utilize the fundraising plan she campaigned on to raise the funds to pay down the line of credit and make Michigan Republicans competitive in 2024.”

Karamo had also announced recently that the Michigan GOP headquarters in Lansing would no longer be used. Instead of spending about $12,000 a month paid to a trust owned by former party chairs, she believes money would be better spent to secure offices in other parts of Michigan so that the party is “more accessible and able to recruit statewide talent.”

Karamo’s ability to recruit donor money is still an unknown factor. Former Republican Vice Chair Scott Greenlee who ran to be the Michigan GOP Chair and lost told “Off the Record” anchor Tim Skubick that he doesn’t think the traditional GOP big money class will open their checkbooks to Karamo.

There are rumors reportedly floating around that the big money donors are talking about forming their own political group to try to win Debbie Stabenow’s Senate seat and take back control of the Michigan House.

Greenlee addressed the rumor by saying, “I’ve heard that. I haven’t had any of those meetings but I’ve heard there are a number of people, so not just one group, but there multiple guns that are trying to from and trying to figure it out and i think those groups have got to work together if they are going to be successful.”

Skubick says that possible players in this new group include Weiser, Bobby Schostak and Dick and Betsy DeVos.
