WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – With the stroke of a pen, President Joe Biden ended the national emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.

The president publicly opposed the bipartisan congressional resolution. Nearly 200 House Democrats voted against the resolution in February. As the measure passed the Senate in March, Biden told lawmakers that he would sign it.

The national emergency declared by President Donald Trump in March 2020 allowed the government to respond to the impending health crisis. The public health emergency was declared two months prior.

Some of the emergency measures have already wound down. Last week, Michigan News Source reported that several hospitals around the state had dropped mask mandates.

The national public health emergency, which is different from the national emergency response, will expire on May 11.

The emergency orders have been extended numerous times since Biden took office in January 2021.
